He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles Hubert and Mary Charles Pierce Johnston; his wife Celia Faye Childress Johnston; his children, Melissa Johnston and James Jr. Johnston (Jamie); and his brother Carman Johnston.

He is survived by : his daughters, Linda Johnston Probus of Peonia and Rhonda Jacobs (Kenny) of Leitchfield; his grandchildren, Jacob, Caleb, Merissa, Alexis, Chris of Tyler, CJ and James "Spikie"; his great grandchildren, Makenzy, Allyson, Sidney, Alice, Caleb, Teddy, Lane and Payton; and his siblings, Betty Johnston, Barbara Childress, Patricia "Tish" Powell, Sharon Roberts, Marlene Hedger, Anita "Tootsie" Jaggers, Mary Jonell Chambers, Jerry, Ernie, Wayne, Jed, David "Doodie", Charlie and Joseph Michael "Joey" Johnston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
