He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Coates and Rosaline Gideon Coates; his children, Michael Leon Coates of Florida and Cheryl Coates of Louisville; his grandchildren, Billy Young, Ricky Collins II and Misty Collins; and his siblings, Lawrence David Coates of Louisville, Arthur Norman Coates of Indiana and Dolores Harrell of Leitchfield.
He is survived by: his wife Jean Wheatley Coates; his daughters, Reinella Coates of Louisville, KY and Kathy Collins (Ricky) of Louisville; his stepson Larry Dechant of Flatwoods, KY; and his brother Arnold Gene Coates. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
