He was predeceased by: his father William Schmelz; his brother David Schmelz; and his stepbrother Norman Miller. He is survived by: his wife Cherie Schmelz; his son Ethan Schmelz; his mother Mary B. McGarvey; his brothers, Martin Schmelz and Richard Schmelz; and his stepmother Sue Schmelz. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends.

Visitation was held on Friday, November 7th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150).
