He was predeceased by: his parents, William Merkling and Celia Herwers Merkling; his wife Nancy Merkling; and his siblings, Valaria Thompson, Cecilia Lindsley and Gilbert Merkling.

He is survived by: his children, Mark Merkling (Lisa), Grace Summers-Knudsen (Scott) and Catherine Kallatch; his grandchildren, Hannah Morgan, Austin Merkling, Matthew Godan, Nyomi Godan, Jessica Sanders, Nicholas Kallatch, Amanda Nusse and Joshua Holuna; his great grandchildren, Zaine Morgan, Ryker Holuna, Sophia Nusse, Kaiden Godan, Kerrigan Godan, Cortana Godan, Caspian Godan and Leo Rempp; and his siblings, Dennis Merkling, Bert Merkling and Alice Meger.
