We announce the death of Darrell Akin Smith of Owensboro, Kentucky, who passed away on September 21, 2026, at the age of 94. Darrell will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. He was predeceased by: his parents, Lee Carter and Greek Akin Smith; and his siblings, Goldie Mae Smith, Leamon Smith (Martha), Margaret Hayden (Carl) and Hettie Bell Sanders (Ed).
He is survived by: his wife Jo Anne; his children, Lynn S. Long of Braselton, GA, Darrell W. Smith of Nashville, TN, Gary L. Smith (Karen) of Southlake, TX and David A. Smith (Leigh Ann) of Owensboro; and his grandchildren, Jennifer Long of Braselton, GA, Matt Long of Jefferson, GA, Emily Gaume (Mitch) of Grapevine, TX, Neal Smith (Katheryn) of Euless, TX, Preston Smith (Audrea) of Lexington, KY and Rebecca Smith of Owensboro. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the James H. Davis Funeral Home (3009 Frederica St, Owensboro, KY 42301). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
