He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Harrison Tatum; his stepfather Carl Tatum; his wife Beulah Cornell Nelson; his grandson Patrick "Jake" Nelson; and his siblings, Lillian Nelson Kinder, Junior Nelson and Thomas Edward Nelson.
He is survived by: his children, James Nelson Jr., Denise Nelson and John Nelson (Jenny); his grandchildren, Samantha Cail (Cody), Johnny Nelson, Hunter Nelson and Dylan Nelson; his great grandchildren, Elaina Cail and Emilia Cail; his sister Patricia Martin (Bryan); and his close friends, J. R. Sutherland, Carl Barker and Glenn "Buster" Cornell. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins.
Visitation was held on Monday, August 11th 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Greenhills Memory Gardens (11800 Gov George C. Peery Hwy, Cedar Bluff, VA 24609). A funeral service was held on Monday, August 11th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 311 West Veterans BLVD., Owensboro, KY 42301.
