He was predeceased by: his parents, Chalmer Detling and Virginia Rai Detling; his son John Vail; and his sister Ellen Detling. He is survived by: his wife Sandra Vail Detling of Salyersville; his children, Lisa Perkins of Salyersville, David Benjamin Detling Jr. of New York and James Caldwell of Orlando; and his siblings, Virginia Coleman, Chuck Detling of Alabama and Robert Detling of Tennessee. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, a host of family and friends.
