He was predeceased by: his parents, John Nelson Harper and Doritha Bea Harper (Phelps); his former wife Iva Christine Harper (Whitis); his wife Sue Katherine Harper (Compton); his sisters, Ailene Dye, Anna Warren, Ophia Brower and Ora McHaffrey; his siblings-in-law, Estill Mercer, William C. Dye, Ernest Warren, Carl McHaffrey and Wanda Harper; and his close friends, Fayrene (Whitis), Martin Strumberger, Carl and Betty Godby.
He is survived by: his children, Diann Crabtree (Clay) and James D. Harper; his siblings, Jewell B. Mercer and Vergis Harper; his grandsons, Patrick Pumphrey (Cindy) of Somerset, Jimmy of Somerset and Christopher Harper of Somerset; his great grandchildren, Tyler and Cali Pumphrey of Somerset; and his stepson Gary Compton (Lisa) of Somerset. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Hospice of Lake Cumberland or American Legions Post # 38 of Somerset, Kentucky.
