He was predeceased by: his parents, John D. Gipson Sr. and Dorothy Gipson (Cunningham); and his sister Beverly Mosley. He is survived by: his son James Gipson Jr. (Courtney) of Clarksville, TN.; his brothers, John Gipson of Paducah, Jerry Gipson of Mayfield and Steve Gipson of Mayfield; and his grandchildren, Isabella, Matteo and Laken. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
