He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Gatz and Margaret Hairston Gatz; his sisters, Charlene Gatz Reis and Laura Gatz Deavers; and his brother-in-law Bob Deavers.

He is survived by: his wife Jean Barnett Gatz; his son Steven Gatz (Catherine); his grandchildren, Carter and Hudson of Fayetteville; his son Michael Gatz (Shamira); his grandchildren, Allison and Ahmad of Baton Rouge; his daughter Jennifer Gatz Fowler (Marston); and his grandchildren, Henry, Will and Caroline of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by family, touching the lives of his nieces, nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 3rd 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church (9150 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810). A Mass will be held on Friday, October 3rd 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic High School.
