He was predeceased by: his parents, Cornelius Johnson and Evelyn Dobard Johnson; and his siblings, Virginia Payton and Jean Johnson. He is survived by: his wife Evelyn Kimble Johnson of Opelousas, Louisiana; his son Barry Johnson, Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana; his stepdaughters, Coretta Matthews of Baton Rouge and Tammy Matthews of Houston; his stepgrandchildren, George Peterson V, Jada Peterson, Tamia Peterson, Sean Peterson, Jaden Peterson, Nailah Peterson and Gabrielle Peterson; his siblings, Patricia Bailey, Leona Tate, Vanessa Moore, Cornelius Johnson, Jr. and Gilbert Johnson, Sr.; and his godchild Melaina Fields. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
