He was predeceased by: his wife Ezel Bergeron Cherry; his parents, Sam Cherry and Josephine Cherry; and his siblings, Frank Cherry, Theresa Rodrigue, Evelyn LeCompte and Mary Harrington.

He is survived by: his children, James Cherry, Jr. (late Peggy), Emily Lefort (Victor), David Cherry (Christine), Amy Wall (George), Anne Cherry and Leah Hargroder (Todd); and his siblings, Margaret Blanchard, Catherine Barbarito, Charles Cherry, Eloise LeBoeuf, Janet Kimbrell and Ellen Vicknair. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 22nd 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Chauvin Funeral Home (5899 LA-311, Houma, LA 70360). Viewing will be held on Friday, October 23rd 2026 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church (409 Funderburk Ave, Houma, LA 70364). A Mass will be held on Friday, October 23rd 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the same location.
