Mr. Charles William "Chuck" Colbert was born on November 23, 1941 in Lafayette, Louisiana to the late Mr. Charles E. Colbert and Mrs. Dolores Ethel George Colbert. He was the first of their three children. When “Chuck” answered the call on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at approximately 3:30 PM, almost ten and one-half years after his mother, four years after his son, he told us all goodbye and soared home to meet his son, parents and all his relatives and friends who had left before him. He felt God needed or wanted a “lead singer” in heaven in his heavenly choir. At his bedside was his wife of over 56 years, Judy Ann St. Julian Taylor, the love of his life; nearby was his sister Pat, brother-in-law Donald Taylor, and niece, Mrs. Patrice Colbert-Johnson, from Maryland, all who were intricately involved in his care and his spiritual well-being.
To his family and childhood friends, he was known as “Butchie,” BUT better known as “Chuck” to everyone else. He was a life-long resident of Lafayette, with brief stays in Lake Charles, La.; San Francisco/ Los Angeles, California; and Portland, Oregon. He was educated in the Parochial and Lafayette Parish public school systems. As a child he was an altar server at Immaculate Heart of Mary church. After graduating from high school, Chuck refused a full paid scholarship to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, La instead, he entered the Navy. After his stint in the Navy he married, Judy, his high school sweetheart, and of that marriage they adopted one child, Merlin James Colbert.
Chuck was a genius. He was a self taught musician and singer. Although he couldn’t read music (after three months, he refused to continue taking piano lessons) you would never know it. Everything he played was by “ear.” He taught himself how to play the piano, the organ, the bass guitar, drums and keyboard. Using that talent he played the organ and was choir director at Assumption Church in Carencro, La. He formed his own band, the Untouchables, played with numerous local musicians and traveled with James Brown, Fats Domino and Solomon Burke. He later became an entrepreneur. He and Judy went into several businesses of their own becoming the proud owners of Spiritual Recovery, Genesis, two night clubs, and two stores.
Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Dolores Ethel Perrot, father, Mr. Charles E. Colbert, step-father, Mr. Albert Perrot, Maternal grandparents- Mr. & Mrs. Belizaire (Eva) George. Paternal-Celestine Lewis and Charlie Colbert; son, Merlin James Colbert; nephew, Jeremiah “Jerry” Jude Cormier; and one brother, Keith Harlan Colbert of Clinton, Md. numerous aunts, cousins, and uncles.
