He was predeceased by: his parents, Hyland Richard Nelson and Eleanor Madeline Keller Nelson; his brothers-in-law, Charles Herring and Chuck Collingwood; and his parents-in-law, Betty and Bob Rivet.

He is survived by: his friend Leo; his wife Janice Rivet Nelson; his daughters, Abi Nelson Banks (Hutton) and Emily Nelson Rogers (William); his siblings, William Richard Nelson (Sherry Copeland Nelson), David H. Nelson (Jan McBride Nelson), Madeline Nelson Herring and Olivia Nelson Hawkins (W. E.); his siblings-in-law, Debbe Collingwood and Douglas Rivet (Connie); and his grandchildren, Nelson William Rogers, Hattie Grace Banks and Lillian Marie Banks. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.
