He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Petersen and Albert Petersen; and his sons, Gus Albert Petersen and Clint Durr. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" DeMoss Petersen; his children, Russell G. Petersen, Jr., Margaret Petersen, John Petersen and Rodney Durr; and his sister Dolores Wilhelm. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
