He was predeceased by: his parents, Estes Mathis and Mary Mathis; his siblings, Byron Mathis, Glennwood Mathis and Mary Sue Mathis Powell; and his grandparents, Dr. E. J., Mary Mathis, George and Sarah Hillman Breland.
He is survived by: his wife Sara "Peggy" Mathis of New Orleans, LA; his children, John Mathis of Baton Rouge, LA and Nancy Mathis of New Orleans, LA; his grandchildren, Jordan Mathis of Baton Rouge, LA, Grant Mathis of Baton Rouge, LA and Colby Mathis of Baton Rouge, LA; and his sister Sarah Mathis Barber. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
