He was predeceased by: his wife Carolyn "Suzie" Fuhrmann; his parents, Oscar Schmitt and Mary Schmitt; his son Brent Schmitt; his siblings, Margaret Schimtt, Ethyl Graves, Oscar Schmitt and Frank Schmitt; and his grandson Alexander Cawood.

He is survived by: his children, Melanie Cawood, Michael Schmitt and Stephen Schmitt; his brother Raymond Schmitt; his grandchildren, Nathaniel Schmitt, Michael Schmitt, Jr., Nicholes Schmitt, Samantha Schmitt and Aaron Cawood; and his great grandchildren, Scarlett Schmitt and Jade Schmitt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the pediatric cancer fund created to honor his grandson, Alexander.
