He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Gardner and Florence Rose Gardner; his stepmother Mildred Gardner; his grandparents, Worley Gardner, Susan Penn Gardner, James Rose Sr. and Sarah Rose; and his siblings, Betty Sue Gardner, Gerald Gardner, Freddie Gardner and Jerry Wayne Gardner.
He is survived by: his wife Jeannine McMillan Gardner; his children, Laura Gardner Johnson (John Johnson) and John M. Gardner, Sr.; his grandsons, John M. Gardner Jr., Devin Phelps, Liam Dalton and Sean Gardner; his sister Rosemary Gardner; and his siblings-in-law, Henry McMillan and Pat Barron McMillan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
