It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Vera Samuels Holmes of Shreveport, Louisiana, born in Mansfield, Louisiana, who passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 80, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Suesie Samuels, Sr. and James Samuels Sr.; and her siblings, Bonnie Davis, Joann Samuels and Odell Samuels.
She is survived by: her husband Author James Holmes; her daughters, Samoine Holmes, Roslyn Holmes Davis (Elisha) and Rachel Holmes Awagu (Ike); her grandchildren, Olivia Davis, Samuel Davis, Thomas Awagu and Jackson Awagu; and her siblings, Shirley Samuels, James Samuels Jr. and Herman Samuels.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 30th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Heavenly Gates Funeral Home (1339 Jewell St, Shreveport, LA 71101). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 31st 2025 at 10:30 AM at the Zion Baptist John H Wilson Center (3038 Hollywood Ave, Shreveport, LA 71108). A burial will be held on Saturday, May 31st 2025 at the St. Mark Cemetery.
