He was predeceased by: his wife Marie "Cookie" Walter; his parents, J. C. Walter and Rossie Walter; and his siblings, Larkin, Lavelle, David, Charles Walter, Marie Mays, Glenda Faye Youngblood, Barbara McDonald and Billie Sue McPhearson.
He is survived by: his son Thomas Walter (Linda); his grandchildren, Waylan Alexander, Brad Walter and April Adams; his son James Carey Walter (Sherry); his grandchildren, James "Red" Walter and Shasta Moore; his daughter Cathy Walter Simmons; his grandchildren, Nicholas Simmons, Jonathan Simmons and Jennifer Sikes; Lloyd Fields, William Fields and Bettie Tee. He is also survived by many great grandchildren.
