He was predeceased by: his parents, James T. Hays Sr. and Lillian Richardson Hays; and his brother J. T. Hays Jr. (Robert "Bobby" Hays). He is survived by: his former wife Gail Hays; and his daughters, Jane Bates (Sonny) and Lenora Ellis (Glen). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.
