He was predeceased by: his parents, James Walter and Eva Sullivan (Whitehead); his wife Lois Sullivan (Umstead); and his son Robert Eric Sullivan. He is survived by: his daughters, Bernadette Sullivan of Boston and Linda Sullivan of Providence; his daughter-in-law Michelle D. Sullivan; and his grandchildren, Candyss Sullivan Woodberry, Joshua Sullivan, James Sullian, Robert G. Sullivan, Jahaira Mohammad, Alshafea Dafalla Mohammad and Johnathan Sullivan-Tinsley. He is also survived by several loving great grandchildren.
Later, Howard University awarded him with an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters) in recognition of his public service and major contributions to society through his teaching career, service to his country as chaplain and service as an officer.
