He was predeceased by: his wife Julie Tholander (Sofield); his parents, Dorothy Tholander of Martha's Vineyard and Kirkland; and his siblings, David and Marion Tholander.
He is survived by: his children, Jason Tholander (Jeanine Lewars) of Sudbury, Matthew Tholander of Lowell and Sara Tholander (R. James Sennott) of Lowell; his sister Dorothy Lucia of Hudson, NH; and his grandchildren, Grant and Sophia.
In recognition of his contributions to wrestling he was named Massachusetts Coach-of-the-Year in 1989 and inducted into the Billerica High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 as well as being the first assistant coach ever inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame where he was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
