He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Nelson and Marguerite Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Anne Nelson (Hannigan); his children, Peter W. Nelson, Diane Nelson (Whelan) of Newport, RI, Sean M. Nelson (Nina Siegel) and David L. Nelson (Samantha M. Harvey); his grandson Charles J. Nelson of Los Angeles, CA; his children, Christopher J. Nelson of Newport, RI, Iris R. Nelson and Isaac A. Nelson of Croton; his brother Robert Michael Nelson (Eileen Nelson); and his sisters-in-law, Joanne Nelson of Brockton, MA and Betty Nelson of Wells River, VT..
