He was predeceased by: his parents, Bert Mathis and Elizabeth Revonia Freeman; his wife Louvenia Mathis (Dunn); and his siblings, Bert Samuel Mathis Jr. and Mary Lois Love.
He is survived by: his children, John D Mathis Jr. (Averil), Louvenia R Mathis (Doc), James L Mathis (Priscilla) and Kimberly A Mathis (Morel); and his sister Doris Mathis. He is also survived by 4 stepsons, and a host of grand children, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Visitation was held on Friday, May 8th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the A. J. Spears Funeral Home (124 Western Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139). A funeral service was held on Friday, May 8th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
