He was predeceased by: his parent Nguyen Van Huan; and his brother Nguyen Thanh Xuan. He is survived by: his wife Riep Thi Vu; his daughters, Catherine Nguyen Phuong O. P. and Nguyen Thi Kim Khang; and his siblings, Nguyen Van Bao, Nguyen Van Dao, Nguyen Thanh Quan, Nguyen Van Dia, Nguyen Thi Vy, Nguyen Thi Phu and Nguyen Thi Thun. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren.
