Born in Boston, he was raised in Avon and was a graduate of Avon High School and continued his education at Massasoit Community College earning a bachelor's degree.
Jim was employed for twenty five years with State Street Bank in Quincy as a mutual funds account representative. Jim enjoyed playing the daily lottery and most importantly time spent with his family.
In addition to his wife Deborah, he is survived by his daughter, Monica Whalen; two sisters, Dorothy Whalen and Ruth Whalen; The Heikkila, Wessel, Coyle-O'Brien and Ribbe families, a niece, Jennifer Silvia and was predeceased by a brother John Whalen and his mother Dorothy Whalen.
