Phillip Cummings Obituary

Phillip Cummings, 76, died unexpectedly in his home Thursday, October 2, 2025. He was the son of the late Phillip Gardner Cummings. Phil was a long-time resident of Essex, MA and went through the Essex school system. You could often find Phil relaxing by his fire pit reflecting on the joy of living in Essex, which he fondly called God's Country.

A devoted parent and grandparent, Phil is survived by his son, Phillip Brian and his wife Kimberly Cummings of Newmarket, NH; daughter, Laura and her husband Steven Dale of Essex, MA; five grandchildren whom he loved deeply, Skylar Cummings, Phillip, William, Elliot, and Isaiah Dale; and his love, Donna Amero.

Phil entered the Army at the age of 18, was quickly recognized as a skilled marksman and served in Vietnam with distinction. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1971, Phil began work as a carpenter. Shortly after, he went out on his own and began his business, Phillip Cummings Contractor and Builder, which thrived for over 45 years.

In his younger years, Phil was an avid marksman, competing in shooting competitions where he often placed well. He spent weeks at a time hunting, fully immersing himself in the outdoors. Phil also had a deep love for fishing and golfing and never passed up an opportunity to be on the water in his boat or out on the course. A true car enthusiast, Phil always had a sports car — his last being a Camaro — and he especially enjoyed taking summer drives with Donna by his side. Phil had a warm heart and an incredible sense of humor, he would make friends wherever he went, and he will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.

Phil is predeceased by his wife, Lesley Killian Curcuru; father, Phillip Cummings; sister, Patricia Cummings; and infant twin brothers.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 9 – 11 a.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Following visitation, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Essex. Burial will take place in Hamilton Cemetery. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phil's memory to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial c/o Cape Ann Savings Bank, 109 Main Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
