He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret (Maloney); his parents, Manuel Bernardo and Mary Bernardo (Mello); and his brother Henry "Hank" Bernardo. He is survived by: his son Stephen N. Bernardo; and his siblings, Elaine Mahoney (Bernardo) and Ernest Bernardo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
