Assunta Favazza Obituary

Assunta "Susie" (Caruana) Favazza, 81, passed away after a brief illness on January 20, 2024. Susie was born on January 8, 1943, in Portovenere, Italy to Tommaso and Maria (Basso) Caruana and grew up in the neighboring town of Le Grazie. On September 20, 1968, she married Salvatore Favazza, and moved to Gloucester with his family shortly thereafter.

Susie was employed by Gorton's of Gloucester for 30 years. She was a member of Cape Ann Bible Church, where she found her true faith and gained many friends.

Throughout her life, Susie made many special trips back to her beloved homeland. She found great joy in spending time with friends and family in the places she grew up. Even 50+ years after moving to the United States, her childhood friends in Italy made sure she didn't go back home without visiting with them first.

Susie's popularity from country to country made perfect sense; she was known for her happy personality, fierce independence, and her generosity toward others. She loved socializing, whether it be during dinner and dancing at the King's Grant, to making friends with strangers in Market Basket, to chatting while getting her hair and nails done. She was an expert seamstress who made her own cutting-edge fashions as a young, new resident of the United States. Everybody loved her cooking, especially her sauce with meatballs and her chicken fingers. Most of all, her company was cherished by friends and family alike.

Susie was survived by her children, Cristina, wife of Anthony Brancaleone, Carlo and his wife, Jennifer, Steve and his wife, Rachelle. Susie was also survived by her grandchildren, Grace Brancaleone, fiance' of Andrew Amaral, Joseph Brancaleone, and Dante Favazza. Surviving family members include sister, Agata Caruana; brother, Giuseppe Caruana; sister-in-law, Franca Caruana; and niece, Daniela Piscopo, wife of Maurizio.

Susie was predeceased by her parents, Tommaso, and Maria; husband, Salvatore Favazza; in-laws, Carlo, and Lucy Favazza; and brothers, Salvatore and Angelo Caruana.

Susie's family would like to thank the staff at Beverly Hospital, and the Kaplan House in Danvers, for taking care of her in her final days. They appreciate the level of comfort she was able to achieve in her final moments and afforded her and her family a sense of peace in such a difficult time.
