Florence E. Surrette Obituary

Florence E. "Florie" (Hannibal) Surrette, age 74, of Gloucester, wife of the late Eugene "Gus" Surrette (with whom she shared 36 years of marriage) passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at her residence. Florie was born August 8th 1947 the youngest child of Norman Scott (Rip) Hannibal and Florence Day Hannibal. She grew up in the family homestead on Summit Avenue in Rockport.

She loved playing the clarinet, sitting on her bed looking out on Sandy Bay, sometimes with her niece Linda. She was a talented musician and played in concert with the United States Navy Band when in High School. Florie attended Rockport schools and graduated from Rockport High School in 1965. She went on to graduate from Beverly Hospital School of Nursing, worked as a nurse and later pursued her Master's Degrees in both Education and Nursing, working in teaching for most of her career.

She and Gus shared their mutual love of teaching and considered every one of their students their "Children". They also loved boating (sailing and motor), motorcycles and relaxing at their getaway property on a lake in Strong, Maine. They retired to the Cape Ann they loved on Essex Avenue in Gloucester. She is survived by her sister, Janice Hannibal Kolacy, nieces Linda Wright, Margaret Quinn, Amy and Jenna Hannibal, and nephews Richie Osmond, Scott Osmond, Charles (Chuck) Osmond, Greg Osmond, Peter Hannibal and Scott Hannibal and many nephews and nieces.

Her little dog, McGee, kept guard till the end. Florie was pre-deceased by her son Erik Holgerson and an infant daughter, her parents, her brother Normal Scott Hannibal Jr, her sister Cynthia Osmond and her nephews Harry R Johnson Jr and Rodney D. Smith. Florie loved us all, our spouses, and our children. Her graveside service will be held in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, Gloucester MA on Wednesday, October 13, at 2 PM.
