Gail M. Scola Obituary

Gail M. (Whynott) Scola, 81, a lifelong resident of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Care One at Essex Park in Beverly.

She was born in Gloucester, MA on February 26, 1942, daughter of the late Charles A. and Marie C. (Zarrella) Whynott. She attended local schools and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1960. She earned her associate degree from North Shore Community College.

Gail's high school job was at Nicholas Candy, a Gloucester landmark, where she indulged in sampling the sweet treats in between helping customers. After college, she worked as an accountant at Nuva, a nonprofit organization in Gloucester, before making the decision to venture over the bridge every day for a similar role in accounting at the Massachusetts. Special Olympics in Danvers, MA from 1987-2008.

She loved to travel and often took vacations with her children and extended family, explored the United States and Europe with her friends, and visited Disney World with her son, his children and his wife.

Gail loved animals, especially the many dogs she had throughout her life. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that she is reunited with them now, especially her most recent French bulldog and light of her life, Cosi.

In her younger days, Gail enjoyed cross country skiing, hiking and riding bikes. In recent years, she could be seen walking the Stacy Boulevard in Gloucester with Cosi.

Gail enjoyed reading and taking courses through the Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) of Salem State University.

Gail will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her two children, Cindi Scola of North Carolina, and Aaron Scola and his wife Nancy of Boxford; and four grandchildren, Justin Gauthier, Tarryn Begen and Jared and Aislinn Scola.

She also leaves behind Peter Genova of Gloucester, her loving partner of 26 years, her aunt Helen Drago of Melrose, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Gail was predeceased by her older brother Charles A. Whynott, Jr. and her younger brother Robert D. Whynott, both of Gloucester.

Her graveside service will be held in Beechbrook Cemetery in West Gloucester on July 15, 2023, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given, in her name to the: Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Suite 301, Waltham, MA 02452, or the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements by Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester.
