George A. Johnson Obituary

George A. Johnson, age 85, of Gloucester, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2025.

Born in Gloucester on October 23, 1939, he was the son of the late George and Louise Crary Johnson. George was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1957. Upon graduating, George joined the Navy for a two-year term. After his naval service, he met and married the love of his life, Jane.

George then reenlisted, opting for the Army as his chosen branch for his continued military career. He had a distinguished 30-year career in the military, retiring with one of the highest ranks an enlisted soldier can achieve, Sergeant Major. He defended our country and was decorated for his service in Vietnam.

Upon retiring, he and his wife Jane, who had both fallen in love with antiques from traveling the world, opened and successfully ran the antique store Gabriel's Limited in Gloucester.

George loved traveling, especially with his wife, Jane, and enjoyed trips to Mexico and family vacations to Las Vegas, where they would attend Vegas shows and dine at some of the finest restaurants. He enjoyed watching or attending Boston's sporting events, especially those of the Patriots and Red Sox. George was an avid runner who participated in marathons across the country and in Canada, including the Boston Marathon. He was a legendary storyteller, keeping his audience young and old, mesmerized. George had a great sense of humor and instilled in his children the values of hard work, perseverance, and loyalty.

He leaves behind his son, Dean Johnson, and his wife, Laurie; his son, Patrick Johnson, and his wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Janine Johnson, and her fiancé, James LeBlanc; his sister, Charlene Monteith, and her husband, James. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving and beautiful wife, Jane Whynot Johnson and his beloved son Timothy Johnson.
