Gwendolyn Louise Cochran Hadden, 82, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a brave battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband of forty years, Dudley "Skip" Hadden; her siblings, Janice and Emmie; her children, Nathalie, Brooke, Dean, Mark, YiYi, and Chris; her nephew, Devin; her grandchildren, Sandra, Adam, Annika, and Dagney; and her great-grandchildren, Isabella, Delilah, and Natalie. She was predeceased by her stepchildren, Naima and Tri, and her grandson, DJ.
Gwen and Skip shared a love that spanned four decades—steadfast, tender, and deeply rooted in quiet, everyday moments that build a beautiful life. Their partnership was grounded in respect and lifted by affection, each strengthening and illuminating the other. Together, they created the rhythm that became the soundtrack of their family.
Music shaped their days, celebrating milestones, soothing hardships, and inspiring their children. An accomplished concert pianist, Gwen could listen to a tune and instantly play it or transform sheet music into flowing melody. Yet, of all her talents, her greatest masterpiece was the family she nurtured with love. Her children and grandchildren carry forward her values—resilience, gratitude, generosity, and the belief that love, like music, is meant to be shared. Every friend who entered her home felt welcomed, many lovingly calling her "Mom.".
Gwen was Founder and President of Cochran Hadden Royston Associates (CHR Associates), the consulting firm she led since the mid-1980s. Through CHR, she advised corporations, healthcare systems, academic institutions, nonprofits, and arts organizations on building equitable, inclusive, and sustainable cultures. Her work emphasized accountability, generational understanding, and meaningful systems change.
Before founding CHR Associates, she served as Director of Civil Rights for the Boston Housing Authority, advancing civil rights compliance and minority business inclusion. She played a pivotal role in integration efforts tied to major redevelopment initiatives, including the transformation of Columbia Point into a mixed-income community.
Gwen earned her Bachelor of Arts from Morris Brown College. In 2016, the North Shore Chamber of Commerce recognized her as one of its Distinguished Leaders for her significant professional and civic contributions.
A celebration of life will be planned for late spring/early summer. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Care Dimensions of Danvers, Massachusetts.
