John F. George Obituary

John George, 65, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on August 14, 1961, to Jean (Stanwood) and John George, growing up in West Gloucester and graduating from Gloucester High School in 1980. John worked for the City of Gloucester for 36 years. He spent his first few years at the old East Gloucester Elementary School where he was fondly known as Mr. John George, before moving to the Department of Public Works (DPW). At the DPW, John worked extensively in the City's cemeteries and took great pride in their upkeep and ensuring families knew where their loved ones were laid to rest.

John will be remembered for the love he had for his family and his special sense of humor. He had a passion for fixing things and had an ever-changing assortment of things to work on ranging from cars to lawnmowers.

John is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Sharon; daughter, Erin George; and son, Patrick George and his wife Emmy. He was the devoted and proud papa to his two grandchildren, Liza and Charlie, who he loved endlessly. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Norton, and his nephew Vincent Ciaramitaro and his wife Marisa, and their children Vita and Enzo. John leaves behind in-laws, nieces, and nephews who he loved dearly. His furry companion Buddy and flock of chickens will miss his care.

Services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026, in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Visitation will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m., with a service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, tell someone a funny story John would have liked or please consider a donation in his memory to Action Inc.
