John M. Montgomery III Obituary
John M. "Spice" Montgomery III, 63, of Lanesville, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital.
He was born in Gloucester on May 9, 1958 and was the son of the late John M. Montgomery II and Marsha (Gronblad) Montgomery.
Spice was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the class of 1976. He attended Northeastern University and played hockey for the Huskies. He scored the winning goal in the preliminary Bean Pot game, sending a 45' slap shot at 5:09 of sudden death overtime to secure a spot in the final match-up, the first year NU ever won a Bean Pot championship in 1980. "Biggest thrill of my life," was his caption in the Globe. Summers were spent captaining the party boats of Captain Bill's, taking charters out for fishing and whale watching with his good friends, Brett Clayton, Marc Cunningham, Tim Pierce, and Steve Sears. Great fiesta Sundays were had by all on the Miss Gloucester every year. Spice spent many summer days and nights fishing for bluefin tuna on his boat the Lakota with great friend Austin Dorr. Traveling from Ipswich Bay to Provincetown harpooning tuna on the longest pulpit ever! He bought his own 42' Bruno Stillman, the Chandelle, in the early 1990's and fished with many colorful characters including his brother Dwight, "Moe".
The 4th of July was his favorite holiday and he would host many friends, perfecting his BBQ skills, at the unofficial parade headquarters for the Lanesville parade.
He became a River Valley Girls basketball coach during the 2004-2007 seasons for his extra special friends, Hannah and Heather Cain. His passion and enthusiasm lead him to the Bay State Blizzards AAU team from 2007-2009 as he coached the girls into many thrilling tournaments. He was extremely proud of Hannah and Heather in all their basketball and personal accomplishments.
To know Spice was to love him. He was a true friend and will be missed by those who were lucky enough to know him-his genuine character, his deep kindness and his "sisu". He will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his Uncle Henry and Aunt Kay Doherty of Danvers; his friends, that were more like family, Hannah,, Heather and Michael Cain and close friends, Brett and Linda Clayton, and his former wife, Ganine Montgomery. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Dwight "Moe" Montgomery.
In keeping with his wishes there are no formal services and a Celebration of Life will be held in the Summer of 2022. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester.
