Joseph M. Capone Obituary
Joseph M. Capone, 65, of Gloucester, husband of the late Laura B. (Souza) Capone, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Sunday, April 10, 2022. Joe was born in Gloucester, MA on December 26, 1956, and was the son of the late Antonino and Antonina (Patti) Capone.
Early on in his adult life Joe worked as a commercial fisherman on his father's boat, Little Frank. He later went on to receive his diploma from Gloucester High School and then furthered his education at North Shore Community College and Northeastern University, where he received his bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology (R&D). He worked at various businesses including BioGen, Eastman Kodak, Nutramax and Varian.
Joe's greatest passion, aside from his daughter and granddaughters, was anything with an engine that he could have rebuilt, specifically cars and boats. He loved spending hot summer days out on the ocean, cruising around the harbor and anchoring at Wingaersheek where he would meet up with friends. Joe always provided the entertainment and kept people laughing with his booming voice, witty one-liners, and great sense of humor. In his younger days, he spent much of his time down the Fort, hanging with the Fort gang, but once he met the love of his life Laura, got married and they had their daughter Erica, his focus shifted to family. When Laura passed in 2008, Joe felt lost, but in recent years with the births of granddaughters Isla, 7 and Mia, 3, he found a new purpose; they became his whole world. He would often refer to them as his "legacy" and loved to spoil them. They would sneak snacks and watch television together, play games and spend time in the yard on the swing set, snail and slug hunting, and taking short walks around the block. He enjoyed family dinners at the home of his daughter and future son-in-law, where he would spend hours just watching the girls play until bedtime. They were the apple of their Nonno's eye.
He is survived by his daughter Erica (Capone) O'Hanley and her fiancé Jason Serrin, her children Isla Jade and Mia Grace O'Hanley; sisters Stephanie Capone and Francine Capone; brother Frank Capone and his wife Stacey and their children, Aliyah and (Godson) Anthony; an Uncle Emiliano (Mimmo) Capone, mother-in-law Kappy Souza, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Alex Ballerin and their son AJ. In addition, Joe has a very close cousin and friend Andrew Bonina, as well as family friend, Rose (Sarina) Aloi, and many other relatives throughout Gloucester, MA, Michigan and Milazzo, Sicily.
He was predeceased by his parents, Antonina and Antonino Capone, his wife, Laura B. (Souza) Capone, sister-in-law Phoebe Souza and father-in-law Donald A. Souza. His aunts and uncles Pasqua and Salvatore Lucido, Isabella and Giovanni Bonina, and Cousin Carmela (Bonina) Brancaleone.
His visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester on Wednesday, April 20 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. His mass will follow and be celebrated in St. Ann's Church, Holy Family Parish in Gloucester at 11 a.m. All attendees are required to wear facial coverings. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
