Margaret J. Doyle Obituary

Margaret Susan Jones Doyle passed on August 30, 2023, with her family at her bedside. She was born in Oberlin, Ohio on April 21, 1928, to George and Mary Jones.

Her father, George T. Jones, was a PHD Professor of Botany at Oberlin College where he taught for 75 years. Margaret attended Oberlin public schools and graduated from Oberlin High School. She attended Oberlin College but did not finish after meeting future husband, Peter Doyle of Gloucester, at a Girl Scout camp in New Hampshire. They married in 1951.

Once married, Margaret and her new husband set out traveling the US. Her first daughter, Rebecca was born in Oregon in 1953. The family eventually moved to Arizona where daughters Renata, Johannah and Sonja were born between the years of 1955 and 1959. In 1963, Margaret moved the family to the Gloucester area where she continued to live until 1979.

There, Margaret worked many jobs, the most significant being as a tutor at Gordon College Remedial Reading Center. Margaret was part of the church community at the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church and later became a founding member of the Cape Ann Bible Church. Margaret enjoyed winter in New England by cross-country skiing with her daughters and camping and gardening in the summers.

After moving to Oregon in 1979, she worked as a nanny for a family and eventually moved to the Virgin Islands with them. Margaret enjoyed the tropical lifestyle and was loath to leave when her parents asked her to come back to Oberlin in 1995. She lived there until 2006 when she moved back to Gloucester where 3 of her daughters still live. Margaret enjoyed traveling to Taiwan multiple times to visit her eldest daughter, and also vacationed in Scotland and the Caribbean in her later years. In addition to traveling, she enjoyed crafts like crocheting and made beautiful beaded jewelry, which she would occasionally sell.

Margaret survived by her four daughters, Rebecca Doyle, Renata Greene, Johannah Curtis and husband Ernest, and Sonja Doucette and husband Scott; five grandchildren, Lynds Jones, Ernest Curtis (Angela), Tyler Curtis (Tammi), Talia Casey (Garrett), and Hali Doucette, and five great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, older sister Frances, and younger brother Lynds.
