Maria Fernanda Alves Obituary
Maria F. Alves, 89 years old, of Gloucester, wife of the late Bob Alves, passed away peacefully Dec. 22, 2021, following a bout with covid.
Maria was born on the Island of Pico, Azores on January 3rd, 1932, daughter of the late Manual and Maria (Lourdes) Brum.
She was a perfectionist who loved to work with her hands, constantly moving furniture and repairing items around the house, yard, and garden. Maria was pious {reciting the rosary every day} and proud of her family's legacy mapped to the DES and Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Upon her husband's retirement Bob grabbed Maria's hand and for decades traveled together annually throughout Europe, Mediterranean, the Azores and Caribbean. Humbly Maria occasionally noted her never imagined experiences. She enjoyed family ski trips throughout New England, Plum Cove Beach mornings to sunsets, breakfast after Sunday mass with family and helping her 2 sons every spring work on the constantly bigger boats beginning in 1970 with "Ski Fever". Over the years while covered with paint most who worked at Bickford's Marine, Beacon Marine and Roses Marine waited for the lunch-time dispersal of sandwiches, soft drinks, and desserts. Maria enjoyed planned and impromptu family members and friends gathering around her home. Growing up she was surrounded by a family with a sense of humor. An idiosyncrasy most enjoyed Maria would see others laughing and begin laughing never knowing the root-cause. Most importantly were her two sons and grandchildren. Maria was known for her charm, warm-smile, and ever-giving kind heart.
Maria is survived by her two sons, Bob Alves, who she only referred to as Robert Joseph, and Dean Alves; grandchildren, Kyle, Stephen, and Dean Anthony Alves; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Brackett Alves; sister-in-law, Fernanda Brown; nieces and nephew, Annalee and Carlos Menezes, Doreen and Bruce Wonson, Carl and Angela Grace, Scotty, and Melissa Brown.
Maria was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Brum; sisters, Elja Costa Rita, and Estela Grace.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 29, at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester. All attendees are required to wear face coverings during Mass. The burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers or to the Open Door, 28 Emerson Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930.
