Marian J. Hegarty Obituary

Marian J. Hegarty, 81, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, passed away on January 13, 2024, due to aggressive bone cancer. She was born to Alex and Ruby Howie in Chilliwack, British Columbia and is predeceased by her parents and brother Gordon. She is survived by husband Ed, her two daughters Joanne and Alisa, and her four grandchildren Emma, Patrick, Tim and David.

Marian attended nursing school in Vancouver, BC and moved to Palo Alto, California to work at Stanford Hospital after graduation. She met her first husband there and as a naval officer's wife moved around quite a bit from Hawaii to Connecticut to California and back to Hawaii. During those travels she had her two daughters, Joanne and Alisa.

While in Hawaii, she became a Real Estate agent and was very active in her church and community. She developed a passion for politics and standing up for what she believed in. Marian embarked on her third career working at the Hawaii State Capitol as a Legislative Assistant. It was around this time when Marian married retired airplane pilot and Gloucester resident, Ed Hegarty.

Now retired, Marian began adventuring to places such as the California desert, the Caribbean, Scotland, and canal boating in the UK. She enjoyed sailing and kayaking. Marian was a very talented seamstress and made costumes for the Annisquam Village Theater players for several years.

Marian's life was marked by a passion for God, politics, a talent for sewing, and an adventurous spirit, remembered for her positive energy and laughter.

Visiting hours will be held in Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, in her honor on Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., followed by a service at 11:30a.m. Burial at Dolliver Memorial Cemetery.
