Mary C. Goncalves Obituary
Mary C. Goncalves, of Gloucester, wife of Joseph Goncalves, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at Addison Gilbert Hospital.
Mary was born in Santo Amaro, Pico, Acores, on Oct. 9, 1932, daughter of the late Jose Luis and Ludovina (da Silva) Morais. She immigrated to Gloucester, Mass., with her husband in 1962. She had a variety of jobs, from working at Mighty-Mac as a seamstress, being a caretaker at Our Lady's rectory, and housekeeping for some hotels in Gloucester. No matter the job, she always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Mary was a skilled seamstress and many people relied on her to make their clothes fit perfectly.
Mary enjoyed talking and meeting people wherever she went. She loved to travel and see new places. Mary was always up for playing her favorite card game of Canasta. She enjoyed thrifting and shopping with her sister and girlfriends. Over the years, Mary had been involved in the women's groups at both Our Lady of Good Voyage Church Guild and the D.E.S. Portuguese Club. She helped with the Crowning ceremonies for many years.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary is survived by her husband of 67 years, Joseph Goncalves. She also leaves behind her brother Herberto Morais and his wife Leocadia; her sister Maria Avila; and her brother Luis Morais and his wife Helena. Along with her siblings, Mary leaves behind many dearly loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her mother-in-law Zulmira Andrade; her brother Joseph Morais and his wife Madalena; her brother-in-law Joseph Avila; and nephew Luis Morais Jr.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, at 11 a.m., in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Family and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
