Mary E. Thomas Obituary

Mary E. (McPherson) Thomas, 80, beloved wife of the late Charles A. Thomas Jr., passed away on Tuesday, August 29th at the home of her daughter Jennette in Reading, MA.

Mary was born in Gloucester on September 22, 1942, to the late George and Madolin McPherson. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School and attended Secretarial School in Boston before working at Sylvania in Salem. She took great pride in her time in the working world and would often demonstrate her superb typing abilities on the "old school" typewriter.

Mary met and then married Charles A. Thomas Jr. in 1964, and they were happily married until his death in July 2004. They were one month shy of celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

Mary had a great love of taking care of her family. After starting a family, she spent the rest of her life as a homemaker, making use of every minute of the day assuring a neat and orderly household, cooking a hearty meal every night, and constantly baking homemade goodies. Her specialties included her famous pineapple pie, chocolate chip cookies, pistachio cake, and her homemade apple sauce. One of her greatest joys was being a Grammy, playing a large part in her grandchildren's upbringing. Whether it was hosting the grandkids every summer, attending countless dance, color guard, and band performances, or a last-minute pickup from school, Grammy was always there.

She leaves behind three daughters, Cheryl A. Beaulieu of Rockport, MA, and twins Jennette M. Thomas of Reading, MA and Karen J. Thomas of Gloucester, MA; 4 grandchildren, Samantha E. Fallon of Los Angeles, CA, Christopher T. Fallon, presently stationed in Norfolk, VA serving in the US Navy, twins, Madolin R. Beaulieu of Rockport, MA, and Chloe M. Beaulieu and her companion Joshua Smith of Salem, MA; brother, Roger McPherson and his wife Marilyn of Gloucester, MA; niece, Melissa Hiller of Gloucester, MA, and nephew, Kevin McPherson of Virginia Beach, VA; and special family friend Eileen Sullivan of Gloucester, MA.

Mary was predeceased by her son-in-law, Mark Roesler (husband of Jennette), and Fred Tarbox (companion of Cheryl), who was an important part of Mary's care routine. Mary was also an animal lover and left behind some special furry friends, Paisley June the Yorkipoo, Annie the Bulldog, and her beloved, loyal companion Sweetie Pie the Cat.

A very special thank you to Andria Hanafin who provided expert care and support through the most difficult times. We are so extremely grateful for the loving care you gave, and we could not have done this without each and every one of you.

Mary's health declined due to dementia, however due to her caretakers and family was able to stay comfortably in her home until May of 2023, when she moved to her daughter, Jennette's house for greater care.

Her loss has left a huge void in our hearts and Mary will never be forgotten.

Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA will be held on Tuesday, September 5, from 4 to 7 PM. Her graveside service will be held at Seaside Cemetery, Gloucester, MA on Wednesday, September 6, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are cordially invited.
