Mary J. Sutera Obituary
Mary J. "Judy" Sutera, 80, of Gloucester, MA, beloved wife of the late Joseph A. "Sonny" Sutera, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Beverly Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bangor, Maine, on December 1, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Virginia (Currier) Fiers. Judy graduated from Gloucester High School, Class of 1962, and later earned a certificate in key punching—a skill that led her to a number of jobs she took great pride in.
Over the years, Judy worked at Ellen's Harborside in Rockport, the State House as a keypunch operator, Varian, and later for the Gloucester Housing Authority, where she was known for her kindness and warm, welcoming nature.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and sister, Judy's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She loved traveling, especially if it meant sharing new experiences with loved ones, and she cherished her casino trips with her children and grandchildren—where laughter, memories, and a little bit of luck were always shared.
Judy had a big heart, a sharp sense of humor, and a deep love for the people in her life. She will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She is survived by her daughters, Gina Ashwell and Lisa Partelow and her husband Brian; her grandchildren, Courtney Giovinco and her husband Peter, Brandon and Samuel Ashwell, Thomas, Jeffrey, and Natalie Partelow; her great-granddaughter, Gianna Giovinco; her sister, Joanne Burlingham and her husband John; sister-in-law, Jean Sutera; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. "Sonny" Sutera; her parents, Joseph and Virginia (Currier) Fiers; and her brother, Joseph Fiers.
A visitation will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. followed by her Funeral Mass celebrated at St. Ann's Church, Holy Family Parish at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to St. Ann's Church, 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester MA 01930.
