Matt Groppo Obituary
Matt (Matteo) Groppo, 51, of Gloucester died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. He was born in Gloucester, the son of Joseph and Rosa Groppo.
Matt attended St. Ann's School and served as an altar boy. He also attended Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody where he played defense on the football team.
Matt received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Springfield College and a degree in Culinary Arts from Essex Agricultural and Tech college.
Matt spent 30 years coaching soccer, floor hockey and tennis, holding several positions over the years with several organizations. He began his coaching career as founder and coach of Cape Ann Tide, an organization that implemented and coordinated soccer and street hockey leagues for area communities. In 2001 he became the boys' head soccer and tennis coach for Austin Preparatory High School in Reading, MA. He then went on to coach at Mass Bay Community college and Marian High School, both in Framingham, MA. Matt spent several years coaching at the New England Revolution Academy as a coach and lastly held the position of head coach at The Innovation Academy charter school.
Matt was passionate about coaching soccer. He was intense at times as his past and current players would attest. His commitment to teaching youth the fundamentals of the game was …. Besides coaching soccer Matt loved wrestling from a young age. He could be found having coffee and eating breakfast at George's coffee shop and Dunkin Donuts. Matt loved talking about ANYTHING sports related with anyone anytime.
Matt is survived by his parents, Joseph, and Rosa Groppo, of Gloucester; sister, Julia Groppo, wife of Thomas Gorham and brother, Joseph Groppo, of Seattle, Washington, husband of Aoife Groppo; nephew, Ciaran Groppo and niece, Saoirse Groppo. He also leaves aunts, uncles, cousins, and many close friends.
Matt is predeceased by maternal grandparents, Giulia Finazzo, Antonio Finazzo, Antonina Finazzo, and paternal grandparents, Matteo Groppo and Giroloma Groppo.
Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by Mass celebrated at St. Ann's Church, Holy Family Parish at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
