Stephen L. Barusso Obituary

Stephen L. "Steve" "Bruno" Barusso, a lifelong resident of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 20th, at the age of 87.

Steve proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division as a Paratrooper and Helicopter Crew Chief. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the Gloucester Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief.

Steve's love story with Sally began in their sophomore year at Gloucester High School. Sally noticing a striking young man gazing out the Lanesville bus window—a glance that sparked a special connection. Their first date, an ice-skating double date arranged by Steve's sister "Bunny," marked the beginning of a bond that lasted 68 years.

Steve had a passion for tuna fishing, which became a family affair in earlier years. He and Sally spent many joyful seasons traveling in their motor home, building friendships and memories. His enthusiasm for cars was legendary, especially his beloved 1980 Corvette, often the subject of good-natured teasing.

Known for his dry wit and signature phrases—"Jeez, it's what I've been trying to tell you, but you don't want to listen," and "That's a hell of a thing to say"—Steve asserted his role as family patriarch with humor and heart. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, community, and hobbies, and for the warmth, humor, and authenticity he brought to every room.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife Sally; their children Steve (and wife Kelly), Scott (and wife Christina), Nikki (and husband Derek), and Julie (and husband Steve); eight grandchildren—Nick, Stephen, and Sal, Alex, Cole, Paige, Nicole, and Brooke; and his sister Beverly "Bunny" Cain.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 4th, from 4–6 pm at Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. A Funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday, November 5th, at 11 am, at Saint Joachim Church, 56 Broadway, Rockport. Burial to follow at Beechbrook Cemetery, 401 Essex Ave., Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
