Lila M. Soper Obituary
Lila Mae Soper, of Ipswich, MA, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born on May 20, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa, Lila was the daughter of Harry and Ethel McConnell. She will be remembered for her kindness, resilience, and the unconditional love she gave to those close to her.
Lila graduated from Drake University and taught third grade at the Mitchell School in southeast Des Moines. She possessed many creative talents, including oil painting, candle wicking, playing the accordion, piano, and organ, as well as singing. Her creativity was boundless and evident in everything she touched.
Growing up on a farm in Davenport gave Lila a deep appreciation for nature, which was reflected in her love of gardening. She was also an avid animal lover, especially devoted to her two poodles, Ebony and Muffin.
Lila was never tied to just one place, but rather to the family and friends she cherished. After living in Des Moines, she moved to Indianapolis, IN and, in 1984, relocated to Devon, PA where she resided for 41 years. In May 2025, she moved to Massachusetts so her daughter could more easily care for her and so they could spend more time together. She enjoyed the beauty of Massachusetts and treasured the time shared with her only child.
She is survived by her daughter, Darcy Soper; her sister, Carol Morrow; and her three nephews, Dale, Dennis, and Dave Morrow.
To honor Lila's life, a small family celebration and tree planting will be held on her birthday May 20, 2026, in Gloucester, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance, which focuses on improving lives through support groups, education, and advocacy, or to the Schizophrenia International Research Society, a global organization dedicated to advancing knowledge of schizophrenia and related disorders.
