He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard M. Cushman and Thurley V. Johnson (Bacheller); his son Richard S. Cushman; and his siblings, Arthur Severance and Mary Cushman.

He is survived by: his significant other Ceppy Avery; and his siblings, Russell Severance, Julie Simard (Gary), Kathleen Rodriguez, John Cushman, Andrea Carey (Timothy), Elizabeth "Betty" Cushman (Scott Beverage) and Stacey Cushman (Robert Williams). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
