Paul Garnett Sr. Obituary

Marlborough, Paul J. Garnett, Sr. 70, of Marlborough, MA died Thursday November 18, 2021 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center after suffering a stroke on November 8th. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Kast) Garnett for the past 51 years. He was born in Waltham, raised in Jamaica Plain, the son of the late Paul E. and Irene R. (Perron) Garnett and was a 1969 graduate of Dorchester High School.

Largely self taught, Paul was a man of many talents and skills. He was an acclaimed artist, sculptor, and photographer, worked with make-up to scare the neighborhood at Halloween, weather permitting, and on his kids' theater projects when they were in school and later. He was a shipwright on M.G.M.'s Bounty in the late 1980's. In the 1990's he worked for the Catholic Church in Clearwater FL designing & hand carving furnishings and adornments for St. Michael the Archangel Church in Clearwater, FL. On returning to Massachusetts, he worked for a scenic company amongst other occupations until retirement..

Through everything he painted. He researched every painting because he wanted it to "tell a story" to whoever viewed it. He loved the sea. His first drawings were of the U.S.S. Constitution in Charlestown, MA and his paintings have appeared in museums, private homes, the J. Russell Jinishian Gallery in Stonington, CT, the Camden Falls Gallery in Camden, ME, as well as the former Mystic Seaport Gallery: on book covers, cd covers, magazines around the world, and have been used in television and movie backgrounds. His paintings of the U.S.S. Constitution were popular, as were the many he did of his beloved Bounty - his "other woman". The Marine Museum in Fall River has a 14-foot replica of the Bounty that he built.

Various sculptures of movie monsters and scenes also won awards. His favorite movie was always the 1933 King Kong.

He loved classical and film music, advising for a number of years the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the late Erich Kunzel when they were working on movie music albums. Paul introduced many. Including the younger generation to the voice of Gordon MacRae.

Affiliated with the National Maritime Historical Society he is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Barbara A. Garnett; a son Paul J. Garnett, Jr. and his wife, Jok of St. Petersburg, FL; a daughter Regan Garnett of North Beach, MD; two granddaughters, Tawny Cashman of Lothian, MD, and Megan Cashman of North Beach, MD; a grandson, Mickey Cashman of Jamaica Plain, MA; three brothers, David Garnett of Wear, NH, Richard Garnett of St. Petersburg, FL and Michael Garnett of Norton, MA; a sister, Michele Perkins of Warwick, RI; his aunt, Anita Walsh of Newtonville, MA and an uncle, Robert Garnett of Milford, CT, many nephews and nieces, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and outlaws, and all his "favorite sisters-in-laws". Family was always first.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday November 27 at 9 AM in Immaculate Conception Church and will be live streamed at https://c.themediacdn.com, Prospect Street, Marlborough. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's name to the National Maritime Historical Society, P.O. Box 68, Peekskill, NY 10566 (https://seahistory.org). Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln Street, Marlborough, MA.

“Paul and I worked together for nine years although I was his boss I knew I was working for Paul Paul was the most productive person I've ever met, working in a small shop personalities complement and clash It wasn't sometimes but all the time, Paul had an opinion..different from most. I always thought of Paul as a savant, a voracious reader of history, sea voyages, poetry, shipbuilding and much more. I would ask Paul how he knew what year a 17th or 18th century ship was built? “Continued: See that rigging it was only used for four years and then the sails were shortened that lasted six years and was changed "..etc. Any question asked about ships prompted a pencil applied to paper, a sketch appeared, his knowledge of tall ships was unmatched. His paintings of ships are true to design often painted from the captain's ship log for true time of day and sea conditions. Paul was a proud family man.”

“We extend our love , sympathy and prayers to the family of the Great Paul Garnett. Painter extraordinaire, marvelous family man who adored his wife , children and grandkids. He was a devout Catholic, adept at decorating churches with brushes and a carpenter's skill. He worked on the"Bounty" for many years and his adventures on the high seas manifested themselves in his marine paintings. One could wipe the spray off of his works/ they were so realistic. Looking at his ships on canvas , one”

“Continued-------- feels transported back in history- observing harrowing expeditions and great naval battles. He loved horror and action films , admiring the makeup wonders and loved to quote the characters. He loved Halloween and enjoyed modeling characters like King Kong. Paul was an original , a true friend and also opinionated. We will not see his like again and he leaves a huge void in his family and friends' lives. Happy voyage and smooth sailing. Your friends, Rita and George Guzzi”
