He was predeceased by: his wife Charlotte Temin; and his daughter Melanie Mendez. He is survived by: his daughter Elizabeth Temin; and his grandsons, Colin, Zachary Gibbons and Elijah Mendez.
His later work on the Great Depression placed a greater emphasis on the international context of the crisis, and he made significant contributions to our understanding of the drivers of the British Industrial Revolution and the nature of the Roman economy.
