Arthur John Ferreira Pontes Obituary
Arthur Pontes, aged 81, passed away with family at his side on December 26, 2024, in Hyannis, MA. Born on May 28, 1943, Arthur graduated from Arlington, MA high school and earned a BA from Suffolk University and MA from Boston State College. He dedicated much of his life to education, shaping minds across the globe as a teacher and administrator. His career included teaching at a number of institutions, including Somerville High School, and 25 years abroad in Quito, Ecuador; The Hague, Netherlands; Florence, Italy; and Antwerp, Belgium; and retired from Sturgis Charter Public School after teaching there for 12 years. Known for his caring and inspiring teaching style with a wry sense of humor, Arthur was revered by his students as "the best teacher I ever had". He received an award for, "Excellence in Teaching" from Harvard and was cherished by colleagues as a friend, mentor, and inspiration.
Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jo Mary; sons, Victor and Joseph, Joseph's wife Antoinette; grandchildren, Patrick, Avery, Tim, Kira, and Jakob; sister, Mary and her husband, Charles; brother, Victor and his wife, Eileen; along with numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
